Wednesday Cricket Preview

No-one could accuse Glamorgan captain David Lloyd of doing Derbyshire any favours on day one of their County Championship Division Two match at Derby – and it’s likely to be the same on day two.

Lloyd is leaving the Welsh county at the end of this season to join Derbyshire, but that did not prevent him from setting the tone in a very positive opening for Matthew Maynard’s men.

Lloyd smashed sixes from the off and although he went quickly for 19, the dominant mood was established for promotion-chasing Glamorgan.

Colin Ingram cracked a magnificent century after Zain ul-Hassan had made 69 to establish just the start the visitors were hoping for.

Zak Chappell was the only Derbyshire bowler to trouble Glamorgan and he picked up the wickets of Lloyd and Sam Northeast, who was out for 13.

Glamorgan began the day in fifth place in the table, but were only six points adrift of second-placed Sussex.

With Sussex not playing in this round of game, Glamorgan’s gaze was probably on Durham at close of play.

The Division Two leaders put Yorkshire into bat at Scarborough, but were frustrated by the Yorkshire openers Adam Lyth and Finlay Bean – who made 113-0 – and then by the weather.

Durham are a huge 54 points clear of Sussex in the table and look a good bet for promotion with five victories from their 10 matches so far this season.

In Division One, there is likely to be plenty more drama at Edgbaston where Warwickshire were all out for only 60 against Middlesex.

Ethan Bamber took five wickets for Middlesex and there were three for Toby Roland-Jones, but the visitors found batting equally difficult and at one stage were 77 for 6 before a recovery.

Somerset were bowled out for 170 by Division One leaders Surrey, and in a morning of low scores on Tuesday, Hampshire were also skittled cheaply, dismissed for just 120 by Essex.

Ben Slater hit a century for Nottinghamshire against Kent, while there was also a fine hundred from Emilio Gay for Northamptonshire against Lancashire at Old Trafford.

There is one match starting on Wednesday morning in Division Two, where Gloucestershire host Worcestershire.

Laying in third place in the table, Worcestershire are a threat to Glamorgan’s promotion hopes after theirrecent win over Leicestershire.
