South Wales Premier League: Cricket Previews

Swansea aim to emerge unscathed from a local derby at Neath on Saturday – and remain the only unbeaten team in cricket’s South Wales Premier League Division One.

The league leaders have so far won four of their five matches with one game abandoned and are 12 points clear of second-place St. Fagans.

Neath are down in seventh place, with just one victory so far and were beaten by four wickets by Port Talbot a week ago.

Swansea, though, are in rich form, as evidenced by their 49-run victory over Cardiff at St. Helen’s a week ago in which opener and Wales National County star Cameron Hemp cracked a superb 125.

Hemp – son of former Glamorgan batsman David Hemp – struck 13 fours and five sixes and found able support from wicketkeeper Will Davey, who hit 65.

Asa Tribe fell one short of a century when Cardiff replied, but figures of 2-38 off his eight overs for Swansea bowler Daniel Rowe kept a tight rein on Cardiff.

St. Fagan’s would have gone into this weekend closer on the tail of Swansea, but the Cardiff club lost for the first time this season to Newport last week when they went down by 23 runs.

St. Fagan’s are away to fourth-placed Pontarddulais, while third-placed Newport – who are just a point behind St. Fagan’s – host Port Talbot, who are bottom and still the only club in the league without a victory.

Cardiff welcome Ynystawe, another club with just one win from five games, while Ammanford – who are bottom-but-one – entertain sixth-placed Bridgend.

While Swansea lead the way in Division One, west is also best in Division Two, where Mumbles are top and also unbeaten after five matches.

In second place are Gorseinon, with Dafen Welfare third and Pentyrch in fourth on the same number of points.

Mumbles are away to Carmarthen Wanderers, who are one off the bottom, while Gorseinon go to Pentyrch.
