South Wales Cricket League: Preview & Specials

Swansea will be looking to keep up their early season momentum when they defend their position at the top of the South Wales Premier Cricket League Division One this weekend.

The club have a narrow two-point lead over St. Fagans as they head to Bridgend Town for their fourth fixture of the season on Saturday.

Swansea enjoyed a thumping 220-run victory over Ynystawe last time out, thanks to a Steffan Roberts century and bowling figures of 3-23 off six overs for Cameron Hemp.

Roberts struck 102 off 126 balls in an innings that included two sixes and seven fours.

Bridgend beat Port Talbot Town by 77 runs in their most recent fixture, but began their season with a defeat against Pontarddulais.

Unbeaten St. Fagans go to Neath, having beaten Cardiff last weekend by 128 runs thanks to five wickets from Owen Morgan (5-12) and a century by C R Nicholls.

The only other club yet to lose this season, Pontarddulais, who are in third, are away to fourth-placed Newport.

Elsewhere, it’s Ammanford at home to Ynystawe and Cardiff hosting Port Talbot.

Mumbles lead the way in Division Two, one of three unbeaten teams from the west, alongside Gorseinon and Dafen Welfare.

Two of those clubs – Dafen and Gorseinon – go head-to-head, while Mumbles are away at Clydach.

Before the weekend club cricket fixtures, Glamorgan are in action in a four day LV= County Championship Division Two game away at Sussex.

The clash will be notable for a contest between the two batsmen who will carry the fight for Australia against England in the Ashes battle this summer – Marnus Labuschagne of Glamorgan and Sussex’s Steve Smith.

Both counties have so far managed one victory and four draws this season, with Sussex in second place in the table and Glamorgan in fourth.

Labuschagne and Smith are set to join up with the Aussies after playing this final fixture for their respective counties.

Labuschagne says of Smith, “He’s been a massive influence on me, just lifting my own expectations as to what’s possible, I think he’s lifted everyone’s expectations.

“It’s just the person he is, how he goes about his game, I’ve learnt so much from him and the way he thinks about the game.

“Our friendship has grown over a four-year period and I’ve learned more and more each year.”

Elsewhere in Division Two, leaders Durham are at winless Gloucestershire, and third-placed Leicestershire are at Worcestershire, who are in fifth.
