Friday Horse Racing: Chesptow & Oaks

Trainer David Evans will bid for a Welsh double at Chepstow on Friday with Man Made of Smoke and Level Up at the afternoon flat meeting.

Level Up will also have a Welsh jockey on board in Isabel Williams in the Sell Your car Today Handicap at 3.00pm.

The horse was a winner over five furlongs at Wolverhampton last month when ridden by Rossa Ryan, but was unplaced at two recent meetings at Windsor.

Daughter of trainer Evan Williams, Isabel recently reached her landmark 50th career win when she rode Pageant Material to success in a novice handicap chase at Ffos Las.

She has since won once more – on Kym Eyre over fences at Stratford – but will face stiff competition at Chepstow from Connie’s Rose who won at the course two weeks ago.

Man Made of Smoke runs in the opening race, the Trade Centre Group Handicap at 1.20pm, with Ray Dawson in the saddle.

The three-year-old was a recent winner at Wolverhampton and should challenge, alongside Profitar Rules, who was first at Newcastle last month.

Dog Fox will be seeking a third successive victory when he runs in the final race of the day, the 4.50pm Bailey Family handicap.

So far this season, Dog Fox has won at both Yarmouth and Haydock with Neil Callan on board, but this time the jockey is Kieran Shoemark.

Elsewhere on Friday, there is also racing at Carlisle, Epsom, Doncaster, Stratford and Catterick.

Most attention will focused on the Oaks at the Epsom Derby festival, where Welsh interest could rest with the North Walian-sounding Caernarfon, who finished strongly recently in the 1000 Guineas.

Trained by Jack Channon, son of Mick, Caernarfon is a giving an Oaks debut to both trainer and jockey Connor Beasley.

“We felt going into the Guineas she would benefit from going up to a mile and a quarter,@ says Channon.

“It’s one of those where we don’t know if she will stay a mile and a half but she has all the assets to and she looks a stayer physically, even if her pedigree doesn’t reflect that.

“The way she runs and the way she races will say there is a chance and she looks to have improved a bundle since the Guineas.”
