Cymru Premier League: Weekend Preview

Colwyn Bay manager Steve Evans believes it will be “sooner rather than later” his newly promoted side starts giving the fans something to shout about.

Their record to date since joining the JD Cymru Premier League as JD North champions has been little to write home about – played five, drawn one and lost four.

Saturday’s long trek south to Penybont doesn’t hold out much hope of improving on that record.

The biggest disappointment has been the lack of goals. Last season they notched 101 in 30 league games at an average of just over three per game in a campaign in which they lost only once.

To date they have managed to hit the back of the net only twice, although one of them was pretty special. Tommy Creamer’s 40-yard screamer at Jenner Park to earn a 1-1 draw with Barry Town United ended up winning the goal of the month award for August.

“It’s going to be sooner rather than later we start picking up points. We aren’t a million miles away,” said Evans.

“We are a tight-knit group. When things aren’t going for you, you just have to roll up your sleeves and run through brick walls for each other.

“The effort and desire is there, but silly mistakes are costing us. Two lapses in concentration against Haverfordwest County last weekend cost us two goals.

“We need to be better in high pressure situations and we need to improve in certain areas. We know we have to be better, and we will get better – we just have to tidy up a few things.

“The fans ae having to be patient because we aren’t giving them much to shout about. But they can see the effort is there.”

With only one point to date, the Seagulls are down among the dead men at the bottom of the table with Aberystwyth Town. The latter are propping up the table and have yet to score a league goal this season.

Aber host Caernarfon Town this afternoon for what is a repeat of the final match of last season. That was a famous day because a last gaps victory for the Seasiders enabled them to maintain their proud record of being ever present members of the JD Cymru Premier by just avoiding the dreaded drop.

Judging by results so far this season, Anthony Williams’ men will be fighting for survival once again. The Cofis, meanwhile, have had a good start to their campaign, although last weekend’s 4-0 home drubbing by Connah’s Quay Nomads was a bit of a kick in the pants.

The Nomads are once again on the road this weekend, heading to Barry Town United, while Haverfordwest welcome Newtown. League leaders The New Saints meet Bala Town on Wednesday night next week.
