The Most Iconic Wrexham AFC Moments

Mickey’s marvels – January 4, 1992

Wrexham 2, Arsenal 1

Wrexham were in the old fourth division, whilst Arsenal were English champions when they rolled up from London to The Racecourse for an FA Cup third round tie.

Alan Smith put Arsenal 1-0 ahead and the Gunners appeared to be cruising before Wrexham were awarded a free-kick 25 yards out from goal, at an angle, in the 82nd minute.

Up stepped Welsh international Mickey Thomas to fire an arrow-straight shot past England keeper David Seaman for the equaliser. Two minutes later Steve Watkin scored the winner and the giant was slayed.

The Neal Deal – October 22, 1975

Wrexham 2, Stal Rzeszow 0

Wrexham manager John Neal had guided the club to the last 16 of the old European Cup Winners Cup where they faced Polish side, Stal Rzeszow.

Before a packed Racecourse crowd of 10,000, the Dragons won the first leg 2-0, with two goals from Billy Ashcroft in a team that included a young Mickey Thomas, plus Arfon Griffiths, who would go on to become manager.

Wrexham went on to draw the second leg 1-1 in Poland, to reach the quarter-finals before losing in the last eight stage to eventual champions Anderlecht.

Laughin’ Arfon – April 22, 1978

Wrexham 7, Rotherham United 1

Wrexham needed a win to clinch promotion to the second tier and they sealed it in emphatic style with a thumping 7-1 win against Rotherham United in front of celebrating fans.

Graham Whittle led the way with a hat-trick and Mickey Thomas, (him again!) John Lyons, Bobby Shinton and Les Cartwright also chipped into the seven-goal hammering in front of ecstatic fans.

There was a joyous pitch invasion at the end and Wrexham – under manager Arfon Griffiths – went on to clinch the old Third Division Championship title.

Mullin’s miracle – April 22, 2023

Wrexham 3, Boreham Wood 1

After 15 years out of the Football League, Wrexham rocked the Racecourse Ground once more by sealing promotion back to League Two amid unforgettable scenes.

Striker Paul Mullin scored twice as Wrexham beat Boreham Wood 3-1, in front of their Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, who celebrated with players and fans on the champagne-soaked pitch afterwards.

A 1-1 draw at Torquay United in their final game gave Wrexham a total of 111 points for the season – a National League record and record for any club in the top five leagues.

They also set new National League records for most wins in a season (34) and fewest defeats (3; joint with Notts County, Crawley Town and Yeovil).

All Hail, Dale – March 26, 2023

Wrexham 2, Connah’s Quay Nomads 1

Wrexham Women set a new record crowd for a female domestic match in Wales when 9,511 turned up at The Racecourse Ground to see them beat Connah’s Quay Nomads, 2-1 in the Genaro Adran North.

Among the supporters were club owners Reynolds and McElhenney.

Managed by Steve Dale, Wrexham became champions after winning their 12th and final game – giving them a 100 per cent record of a dozen victories.

They went on to clinch promotion to the Genaro Adran Premier by beating Briton Ferry Llansawel, 1-0, in the play-off final at Newtown.
