JD Cymru South: Weekend Round-Up

The students of Swansea University have not achieved the required pass rate and instead of graduating, they’re going down.

A 2-0 defeat at Llanelli Town means Swansea Uni will be relegated from the JD Cymru South to the Ardal South West at the end of the season.

It’s a dramatic decline for a club good enough to be Cymru South champions only three years ago.

A nervy first half, in which Swansea picked up three yellow cards, ended goalless before Sean Cronin converted a 66th minute penalty for the home side.

Elijah Phipps then doubled the lead seven minutes later to keep his side on course to finish as runners-up to champions Barry Town United.

There were nine teams with a mathematical chance of going down in the lower half of the southern section and one of them, Goytre United, did their chances of staying up a power of good with a 5-0 home win over Ammanford

They were 3-0 up in half-an-hour, thanks to goals from Jordan Edwards, Josh Jones and Dan Paul, and Ben Cripps added another in added time before the break.

Jonathan Fletcher rounded things off in the 87th minute to bag the full three points and make it the biggest win of the season in every sense.

Trefelin BGC were not so decisive and failed to ease their relegation worries after managing no more than a point in a 1-1 draw at Cwmbran Celtic.

It leaves Trefelin still in the relegation zone, a point behind Taffs Well who have troubles of their own following a 2-1 defeat at home to Cambrian and Clydach.

Bottom of the table Ynyshir Albions also won 3-1 at home against last season’s champions, Llantwit Major, but with only two games to play, there is now no escape for them.

Zack Philpott gave Albions the lead in the 23rd minute before Paolo Marenghi levelled things up on the half-hour mark.

Carter Campbell and Deacon Greening then completed the victory in the second half.

Taffs Well are still slight favourites to stay up with three games left, while Trefelin have only two.

Champions Bary Town United are certainly not easing up just because they have gone over the 70-point mark.

They thrashed Afan Lido, 8-3, in their final home game of the season and manager Lee Kendal said: “I’m so pleased for everyone who has worked so hard this season and we’re now back where we belong – in the Cymru Premier.”
