JD Cymru Premier: Tuesday Night Matches Review

Ben Clark has set himself a target of 20 goals this season after The New Saints reminded anyone who may have doubted it that they are streets ahead of the rest in the JD Cymru Premier.

Clark scored twice to take his tally to 15 for the season, in a 3-0 win at home to Bala Town on Tuesday night.

The result took the champions 16 points clear at the top of the table and means they end phase one of the campaign by hitting the 60-points mark.

Attacking midfielder Clark scored both his goals in the second-half after Ryan Brobbel had given the home side an early lead and they could even afford a missed penalty by Declan McManus.

The Saints, though, have got where they are by setting high standards and Clark insisted: “I thought we were sloppy in the first-half and lacked tempo.

“In the second half we stepped it up a bit after the gaffer had a word at half-time.”

As for his goalscoring contribution this season, he added: “As soon as I started scoring, everything I hit seemed to go in. I feel quite lucky and if I can try and get 20 for the season I will be quite happy with that.”

The Oswestry club are now 16 points clear of Connah’s Quay Nomads and can boast a record of 22 matches, 19 victories and three draws with no defeats.

Clark added: “We are unbeaten in the first phase of the season which is nice to have under our belts. Now, we need to extend that and go through the whole season unbeaten.”

With phase one over, the New Saints turn their attention to the JD Welsh Cup this weekend and a fifth round trip to Cwmbran Celtic.

The Nomads ended their phase one campaign with defeat as they crashed 2-1 at Haverfordwest County.

It was Connah’s Quay’s first defeat since September and it means they finish in second place, three points clear of Penybont, but a whopping 16 points adrift of the Saints.

The Saints and their manager Craig Harrison will be firm favourites to regain their title when phase two starts again with the clubs split between top six and bottom six from February 11.

Haverfordwest move up to finish their phase one league campaign in seventh place, leapfrogging over Caernarfon Town.

Elliot Dugan gave the Bluebirds an early lead but Ben Nash quickly responded with an equaliser for the Nomads to make it 1-1.

Haverfordwest manager Tony Pennock was rewarded when his team regained the initiative and a penalty from Jordan Davies clinched a notable victory.

It capped a good day for Pennock and the Bluebirds after he had earlier signed winger Jack Leahy on a transfer deadline day loan from Cardiff City.
